How To Upgrade Your Computer RAM

Upgrading your computer RAM yourself can speed up your computer and save you some money of having it done by a computer shop. RAM (Random Access Memory) is a computer chip than can be easily installed. By upgrading your RAM, your computer will be able to load and switch between programs faster. The programs that are running will also run faster.

Step 1: Determine which kind of RAM you need.

This can be done by either opening the computer and removing a RAM chip and looking at the numbers on the label.

OR

By going to THIS WEBSITE, which automatically scans your system and determines which RAM module will be the best for your computer. RAM can also be purchased from that same website.

Step 2: Purchase the RAM. These days, RAM is fairly cheap. You should be able to upgrade to the maximum amount of RAM for under $75 for an average system.

After the RAM is purchased, it needs to be installed.....

Step 3: Gain entry to the inside of the computer where the RAM is located.

BE SURE THAT THE COMPUTER IS POWERED OFF AND POWER IS REMOVED

If you have a desktop PC, remove the side case. This can be done by removing a screw or two on the rear of the computer. (Lie the computer on its side with the front facing towards the right...this is the side which you need to remove).

If you have a laptop PC, turn the laptop over and look for an access area which can be removed by removing one or two screws. The RAM will be underneath this piece of plastic.

Step 4: Remove the old RAM by pressing the tabs on each end of the RAM which will release the RAM modules allowing you to remove them.

Step 5: Insert the new RAM. There is only one way it can be inserted, so it is pretty much fool-proof. Push down on the RAM module to secure it into its slot.

Step 6: Reinstall the side case of the computer, or if you are using a laptop, the plastic access panel.

Step 7: Power up the computer. If all went well, the computer will boot up normally and will recognize the new RAM automatically.
