How To Setup A Home Network
The easiest way to share files between more than one computer in your home is transfer them over a home network. Home networks are also used to share an internet connection. Home networks are easy to setup and are easy to maintain by anybody. This network configuration is based on a Windows network configuration.
Items Needed:
- Internet Connection (Optional for Local Area Network (LAN), but needed to access the internet)
- Router (To connect more than one computer to the internet)
- Network Cables (To attach the computers to the router)
- Computer(s) (To use transfer files and actually utilize the network (no-brainer))
Step 1:
Purchase all the items
that are needed
|
Step 2:
Connect your router. Usually, the router will come with instuctions to assist in connecting it to your computer. If not, CLICK HERE to learn how to connect a router.
(A router is not the same as a hub. A router is used to configure an internet connection and SETUP DHCP or VIRTUAL SERVERS. A hub is used only to connect computers to each other and the routing and file transfer is based on the software on the computers themselves.)
|
Step 3:
Configure the router to connect to your internet connection and setup the Wireless ( Wi-Fi ) option.
|
Step 4:
Configure the computers themselves to SHARE FILES and/or SETUP PRINTERS.
|
Step 5:
After the router is configured, the settings are saved to non-volatile memory. If power is lost, the settings are still saved and will be restored when the router is powered back on.
If there is a problem with the router or a wireless internet connection on a computer which is connected to the network cannot be connected, the router can be reset by pulling the plug on the router and replacing it in about 10 seconds. The router will then power back on and restore the settings that were configured on the router.
If that does not work. The reset button on the router may have to be held for about 10 seconds while the router IS plugged in, in order to do a hard reset (a hard reset will erase all of the configurations that were set to the router. the configurations will then need to be re-configured after a hard reset is performed).
