Wireless internet is awesome! Wi-Fi allows you to surf the net without being directly connected to your modem. Wi-Fi is great especially if you have a laptop or a cellphone which is Wi-Fi enabled. Below is the general configuration which a router is connected. See my other webpage: How To Setup A Local Area Network in order to configure the router.
Step 1:
If a DSL or Cable modem is already connected to your computer, disconnect the cable |
Step 2:
Connect that cable to the "Internet" or "WAN" port on the back of your router. |
Step 3:
Connect a patch cable from one of the "LAN" ports on your router to the Ethernet port on the back of your computer |
Step 4:
Plug in the power cord to the back of the router and then plug the power block into a wall outlet. The router will now be powered on. |
Step 5:
Configure the settings on the router. For example, if you have a DSL connection, a password must be entered into the router to enable it to connect to your DSL service.CLICK HERE to learn how to do so. |
Step 6:
Printer Sharing and File Sharing can now be setup over your Local Area Network. Instead of saving files to swappable media, such as Flash Drives, and then opening them on other computers, the file sharing options of LANs allow users to share the files on other computers with ease. |
Configure Router To Connect To Internet
After your router is installed, it must be configured to connect to the internet. If you have DSL, the username and password, supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) must be entered in order to allow a connection
Step 1:
Login to your router on a computer that is attached to it. Open Internet Explorer and type the IP address of the router into the address bar and press enter. (The IP address, username, and password can be found on the bottom or back of the router.)
Step 2:
Type in the username and password of the router. (The IP address, username, and password can be found on the bottom or back of the router.)
Step 3:
Navigate to a tab that says 'WAN' (Wide Area Network)
Step 4:
Select your type of connection. (Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, or Other) If you are using DSL, such as Verizon, you would select PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet)
Step 5: Enter your username and password or any other information which was provided by your ISP to allow you to connect to the internet.
Step 6:
Click 'Apply' or 'OK' to save the settings
Step 7:
Test your connection by trying to go to a website.
Configure Wi-Fi Settings
| |
Step 1:
Install your router
Step 2:
Configure your router to connect to the Internet. (Although you do not need to be connected to the Internet to share files or printers wirelessly) |
| |
Step 3:
Login to your router to configure settings. (Open Internet Explorer, type the IP address of the router into the address bar, press enter, enter username and router password)
Step 4:
Navigate to a tab that says "Wireless" or "Wi-Fi" |
| |
Step 5:
Enable the wireless option
| |
Step 6: Enter a SSID (Service Set Identifier) name which will distinguish your wireless network from others around you and other wireless connections that are setup on your computer. Also, enable the SSID to be broadcast, which allows your wireless network to easily be setup on your computers.
For example: "Johns Wireless Net"
Step 7:
Secure your wireless connection |
| |
Step 8:
Choose a the type of security algorithm you wish to use to encrypt your Wi-Fi network (WEP or WPA). I choose to use WEP
Step 9:
Make a password to encrypt your Wi-Fi network. I chose to use a WEP 128 bit encryption which allows 26 hexadecimal password which can contain letters and numbers. You can also choose 64 bit WEP encryption which only allows a 10 character password.
However, WPA is more secure and harder to crack. WPA allows you to use a password containing numbers, letters, and other characters.
| |
Step 10:
Apply the settings by clicking the ' Apply ' button or ' OK ' button
| |
Step 11:
Setup your wireless connection on your wireless enabled computers.
Setup Wireless Conections On Your Computer
| |
Step 1:
Install your router
| |
Step 2:
Configure your router to access the Internet
Step 3:
Configure wireless settings |
Step 4:
Secure your wireless network |
| |
Step 5:
Boot up the computer you wish to connect to the wireless network. The computer needs to have a wireless card installed in it. (The wireless card is the actual piece of hardware which allows the computer to connect to a wireless network)
| |
Step 6:
Be sure that the wireless card and the wireless router is turned on and active.
| |
Some wireless cards come with software to configure the wireless connection. However, I usually choose not to use that software and instead use the 'Wireless Zero Configuration' utility that comes with Windows XP....learn how below.
| |
Step 7: Go to Control Panel (By clicking the 'START' button, and then 'CONTROL PANEL')
| |
Step 8: Double-click 'Network Connections'
Step 9:
Right-click on the 'Wireless Network Connection' that corresponds to your wireless device and then click 'View Available Wireless Networks'.
| |
Step 10:
Double-click on the wireless network that corresponds to your SSID.
Step 11:
Enter the password that you used to encrypt your wireless network. |
Step 12:
Click OK and go to a website to check if your are connected to the Internet....Wirelessly!!! |
