Repaint An Outdrive
If you own a boat and keep it in the water, chances are your outdrive has electrolysized. If there are bare spots in the paint and spots that appear to have a white chalky powder, the outdrive needs to be stripped and painted. There are a few different ways to strip the outdrive. The easiest would be to have it glass beated. I used paint stripper and a metal scraper.
Since the outdrive is made out of aluminum, DO NOT allow any stainless steel tools to come in contact with the outdrive.
Items Needed:
Aluminum Oxide Sandpaper (Various Grits)
Paint Stripper
Tools To Remove The Hydraulic Rams and Propeller
Zinc Cromate Primer
Mercruiser Phantom Black Paint

The outdrive before any work was done to it.
Notice the electrolysis and pure nastiness of how it looks. |

|
The work has begun.
At first, I was only using a metal scraper without anything else. A sharp edge on the scraper and some elbow grease will easily get the bulk of the paint off.
In order to get into the tight areas, it was easier to use the paint stripper. |

Far from done.
A picture was not taken of the completely stripped outdrive. There was still about 6-7 hours of work after this picture was taken.
Make sure there is ABSOLUTELY NO PAINT left on any area of anything metal. This will ensure that that primer gets into the tight areas and will completely protect from any future damage due to electrolysis. |

|
After the first coat of primer.
Zinc Cromate primer (available from most any boat supply store) was used to prime the outdrive. Coat everything on the outdrive.
The hydraulic rams were removed by loosening the nuts on either side of both ends of the rams. The shafts can then be removed. Keep the components, which fasten on the rams, together and in order to easily re-assemble. |

|
Get into all of the tight spaces and get a few coats on. |
