How To Fiberglass

My brother recently constucted a concrete countertop for his master bathroom. In order to make a drain for this one-off piece of art, fiberglass needed to be molded and shaped to catch the waste water. After the fiberglass is molded, a hole will be drilled in the bottom and a drain pipe fitted.

Here is a picture of the first drain which was made.

Fiberglass resin is used to harden the fiberglass. Once the catalyst and the resin are mixed, it will harden in a few minutes.

The first thing to do is to make a mold to adhere the fiberglass to. The fiberglass will take the shape of the mold, and the mold will then be broken away, leaving only the fiberglass.

Using a thick cardboard, a rough mold is constructed.

Here is the mold in final form. It is covered with painters tape to make it easier to remove from the final fiberglass structure.

The mold is then fitted to the bottom of the concrete countertop and surrounded with wax paper, also to facilitate easy removal of the mold.

The fiberglass mat is test-fitted to the mold. Trim away any excess, but make sure to leave enough overlap.

The fiberglass mat can now be adhered to the mold.

Allow to dry.

The fiberglass cloth can now be adhered in order to strenthen the structure.

Put enough resin on to make the cloth stick.
